The Gosei tournament is a Japanese professional go competition featuring a challenge against the Gosei for his title.

The Gosei tournament is comprised of a 24-player league single-knockout tournament.

Preliminaries are held by the Nihon Ki-in and Kansai Ki-in.

Prior to 2012, members of the Nihon Ki-in 4-dan and under were not permitted to participate in the Gosei tournament (no such restriction was placed on the members of the Kansai Ki-in).

The winner of the tournament earns the right to challenge the Gosei in the finals, which are played as a best-of 5 series.

The winner of the series gains (or retains) the title of Gosei.

The four semifinalists are seeded in the next year's Gosei tournament.

"Gosei" may be assumed as an honourary title by players who have won the title 10 times in a row, or at the age of 60 or at retirement by players who have mounted 5 successful sequential defences of the title.

It takes 18 months to progress from Preliminary C to the final title match.
