The format of the Kisei tournament changed soon after Hikaru became a professional:

The 28th Kisei Tournament is the last tournament covered under this structure, with initial preliminaries running from 2002 October through 2003 February.

The 29th Kisei Tournament is the first tournament covered under this structure, with initial preliminaries running from 2003 June through 2004 January.

Title

"Kisei" may be assumed as an honourary title by players who have won the title 10 times in a row, or at the age of 60 or at retirement by players who have mounted 5 successful sequential defences of the title.
