This chapter takes place on January 3rd of 1999.

Material from this chapter was adapted into the anime episode Game 3.

Hikaru and Touya take the train from Ichigaya Station to the Touya Go Salon.

Hikaru expresses worry to Sai about Sai's abilities, pointing out that in the previous game he played against Touya Sai was ahead by only two points of territory (ignoring komi, of which Hikaru and Sai are ignorant). Sai reassures Hikaru that he had played shidougo, the point of which is to guide one's opponent and teach him more about the game, as he didn't want to use his full strength against a child. Hikaru is reassured, and remarks flippantly that of course Sai is better than Touya since Touya is just a sixth-grade kid the same as Hikaru. Sai corrects Hikaru, telling him that Touya is in fact quite talented, with potential yet for growth. Despite that, Sai feels Touya isn't yet a match for him.

Touya and Hikaru arrive at the salon. There is great interest from the salon patrons in their game. Hikaru is disconcerted, but he notes that the atmosphere isn't affecting Touya at all.

Touya teaches Hikaru how to nigiri, and explains the function and value of komi.

The game begins. Hikaru is intimidated by Touya's furious expression, but Sai is enjoying the idea of how his own skills must evolve in order to take into account new game features like komi.

  • Sai claims to have never lost when playing as black.
